Firmware update via the USB interface

Firmware Update via USB

Applies to: • mbNET • mbNET.rokey

You can update the router directly via the USB interface. The device automatically detects the firmware stored on a connected USB stick. By pressing the Dial Out button or the FCT button (from HW:06), you start the firmware update.

Notes on the hardware version:

To select the correct firmware file, it is important to determine whether the device has hardware version 01 or newer.
You can identify this on the device housing:

  • The older devices have a yellow housing frame and the 8th LED is labeled Err :
  • From hardware version 02, the frame is gray and the 8th LED is labeled Stat :

In the portal you can recognize it by the firmware version:

  • FW versions 3.x.y to 5.x.y correspond to a HW01 device.
  • If the firmware is at least 6.x.y, it is a device with HW version 02 or newer.

Preparation

  1. Identify which hardware version you have
  2. Go to https://mbconnectline.com/download-portal and download the latest firmware version (e.g. "mbNET_FW_V623.zip").
  3. After unpacking, you will find the actual firmware file in addition to "Changelog.txt" and "open-source-software-licenses.txt" ("image.bis" (HW01) or "image.swux" (HW02)).
  4. Save the firmware file on a USB stick.
Additional notes:
  • The firmware file must not be renamed and must be placed in the root directory of the USB stick!
  • The USB stick must be formatted with FAT or FAT32!
Direct import of a configuration after the firmware update (optional)

To save steps, you can load a configuration directly after the FW update. In addition to the image.swux firmware file, place a configuration file that you have renamed to mbconnect24.auto:

Start the FW update as described and leave the USB stick inserted. During the first reboot after a firmware update, the router checks for the presence of mbconnect24.auto and, if available, loads it. After about 5 minutes in total, the router will have both new firmware and a new configuration.

Execution

  • Check if the mbNET is ready for operation: (LED Pwr Rdy are on),
  • Insert the USB stick into the USB port of the device. Watch the LEDs Fc1 and Fc3

  1. As soon as the mbNET detects the firmware file, the LEDs Fc1 Fc3 begin to blink.
  2. Now press the Dial Out / FCT (from HW:06) button and hold it until LED Fc2 blinks.
  3. Release the Dial Out / FCT (from HW:06) button.
After reading and activating the new firmware, the device performs a restart.
  4. When both Pwr and Rdy LEDs are on, the firmware update is complete.

The mbNET is now ready for operation and can be used as usual.
You can now remove the USB stick.
Warning:

IMPORTANT: During the firmware update:

  • Do not press the reset button
  • Do not power off the device
  • Do not remove the USB stick
Notes:
  • If both the firmware and an mbCONNECT24 portal configuration are stored on the USB stick, the mbNET will always recognize the firmware first (Fc1 Fc3 blinking). If you do not press the Dial Out / FCT button within 10 sec, the mbNET switches to the portal configuration (Fc1 Fc2 blinking). If you also do not respond within 10 sec, the device returns to normal mode.
  • In rare cases, the USB stick used may be unsuitable for this process. In that case, please use a different USB stick.
